Sketches and caricatures, 1806–1829, n.d.
Scope and Contents
This box contains a collection of notes, drawings and caricatures. Included are a six page sketchbook with notes and drawings of scenes from a botanical trip from Bremen to Bassum in 1806, a pen-and-ink drawing of the Mertens' home in Bremen by Mertens' son Carl Heinrich Mertens (1796–1830) and a large sheet with caricatures representing various "National Opinions on ---". (The missing name, which was torn out from the bottom of the page, is undoubtedly "Bonaparte"; it was most likely removed from the caricature due to the fact that it was increasingly dangerous to be accused of disrespecting Napoleon at that time.) There is also a drawing of Mertens and his son Carl Heinrich with notes on the reverse, an ink wash picture of the corvette Senyavin signed by Alexander Postels (Carl Heinrich Mertens served as the expedition botanist onboard this ship from 1826–1830, on two expeditions: one which circumnavigated the world and another to Iceland), and an undated, unsigned ink drawing labeled "The Street-Sweeper at the corner of Bridge Street – opposite Fleet Market".
