The bulk of this collection is a series of letters sent to and by Marcus Eugene Jones regarding both his professional and personal life. His professional letters cover both his work as a botanist and his work as a mine manager in Salt Lake City. Additionally, both facets of his professional life are represented in documents and handwritten notes. Another large portion of the collection contains autobiographical material he dictated late in his life, detailing memories of his childhood and his career. Finally, there are reprints and working copies of articles he published in Contributions to Western Botany, and personal financial documents such as checks and receipts. The collection was received in late 1965 from Jones' daughter, Mabel Jones Broaddus.
