Content Description
This collection consists of typescript journals of Knoche’s botanizing in the Canary Islands (November 1915–June 1916; one bound volume, 273 pages) and in Spain (July 1915–June 1916, January–February 1917, August–September 1920; one bound volume, 177 pages). Both volumes include many remarks on the countryside, towns, and natives, as well as notations concerning the flora of the region. Each volume also contains numerous photographs, and the Canary Islands journal contains hand-drawn maps.

Biographical / Historical
Phytogeographer Edward Louis Herman Knoche (1870–1945) studied botany at Stanford University (1895–1899) and then at the University of Montpellier (1910–1922) under Charles Flahault (1852–1935). He was the author of Flora Balearica and Etude Phytogéographique sur les Iles Baléares. A man of independent wealth, he traveled and collected extensively and maintained a library and herbarium at his home in San José, California.
