Content Description

This collection contains a manuscript (in French, 1775, 671 pages) of “Plantes des Environs de Paris.” A note in the front of the volume indicates that the contents are “quelques plantes qui sont le plus généralement cultivées dans nos jardins pour l’ornement de nos parterres, quoique étrangeres a notre sol. Ces plantes sont rangées suivant une nouvelle méthode" (in English, "Some plants that are most commonly cultivated in our gardens for the ornamentation of our flowerbeds, although foreign to our soil. These plants are arranged following a new method").

In the front of the book are detailed the classification methods of Joseph Pitton de Tournefort (1656–1708) (6 pages), Antoine de Jussieu (1686–1758) (1 page), and Jean Baptiste Pierre Antoine de Monet de Lamarck (1744–1829) (1 page); a discussion of the classification methods of Carl Linnaeus (1707–1778) and references to the work of Lamarck and Jussieu; and a list (2 pages) of the order followed by the Jardin des Plantes, which was in accordance with Jussieu’s method. The contents of the volume are divided into 15 classes, each with various subdivisions, and at the beginning of each new class there is a brief description of the characteristics of the plants included. The volume also contains original drawings, with black-and-white and colored plates pasted in, and plant specimens.
