Content Description
This collection consists of correspondence between Harding and French horticulturist Emile Lemoine (1862–1943), along with photographs, manuscripts, and other miscellaneous material. In addition, there is some correspondence concerning Harding after her death between her husband, Edward Harding (?–1952), and various correspondents. The correspondence between Harding and Lemoine refers to their successes in raising peonies. Harding also contributed substantial sums to the Société Centrale Horticulture Nancy, and the award she received for this is described. Letters (ca.98 total) are arranged chronologically.

Biographical / Historical
Alice Howard Harding (?–1938) was an American horticulturalist based in Plainfield, New Jersey who specialized in flowers, especially peonies, lilacs, and irises. A frequent participant in flower shows across the United States, Britain, and France, she was a member of the Garden Club of America and a fellow of the Royal Horticultural Society of Great Britain. In 1928, she received a medal from the American Peony Society and, in the same year, the government of France honored her as a Chevalier du Mérite Agricole. She was also the author of The Book of the Peony (Philadelphia: J.B. Lippincott, 1917; HI call no. DT100 86 H263B); Peonies in the Little Garden (Boston: Atlantic Monthly, 1923); and Lilacs in My Garden: A Practical Handbook for Amateurs (New York: Macmillan, 1933).
