Lucius Junius Moderatus Columella (ca.4-ca.70) De Re Rustica
Content Description
This manuscript is a 15th century copy of De Re Rustica (english: On Agriculture). De Re Rustica is originally a 12 book work, with the following contents:
Book I: Discusses farm layout and staffing
Book II: Discusses soil, ploughing, and planting
Book III, IV, V: Discusses various species of trees and vines
Book VI, VII, VII: Discusses farm animals
Book IX: Discusses bees
Book X: Discusses gardening, written in hexameters in the style of Virgil
Book XI, XII: Discusses the duties of the bailiff and his wife
In this copy, a seperate work by Columella, entitled De Arboribus (english: Of the Trees) has been inserted as Book III, shifting all subsequent books down one number for a total of 13 books. In modern publications, this work is published alongside De Re Rustica as an additional book at the end.
The manuscript is bound in paper boards and white vellum. Two vellum sheets were added to the front and the back of the binding as guard-leaves. The front cover is labelled faintly in a different hand: "A Monsiuer; Brack directeur des douanes, membre; de l'academie de Marseilles.; A marseilles." Within the text, there are many notes and corrections written in the margins, in the same hand as the main text of the manuscript.

Biographical / Historical
Lucius Junius Moderatus Columella (born in 1st century AD, in Gades, Spain) was a farmer and author, best known for this publication. Little is known of his life beyond what was written in his works. Relevant to this publication was his inspiration by the poet Virgil, which manifests in Book X of De Re Rustica, which is written entirely in dactylic hexameter.
