Biographical / Historical

James Sykes Gamble (1847–1925) was a British forester and member of the Indian Forest Service. He was selected for forestry training by the Secretary of State for India in 1869 and posted in Burma in November 1871, only to be moved months later to Bengal where he wrote the volume featured in this collection and served as editor for Sir William Schlich's Indian Forester. Afterwards, he was made Conservator in Madras until 1890 when he became the Director of the Imperial Forest School at Dehra Dun. Besides List of the Trees, he is also known for his publications A Manual of Indian Timbers (1881) and Flora of the Presidency of Madras (1915).
