Baki Kasapligil (1918–1992) was a botanist and professor who specialised in plant anatomy. He received a PhD from the University of California, Berkeley in 1950 and subsequently returned to Türkiye, his country of birth, as an assistant botanist at the University of Ankara. He received a post-doctoral habilitation degree from the university in 1953, at which point he became an assistant professor. In 1954 he accepted the position of Forest Botanist at the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, headquartered in Rome, where he lead a project surveying forests and grazing lands in Jordan. In 1956 he returned to America to teach at Mills College in Oakland, California where he remained until his retirement. He was well known for his internationally focused botanical work, with his specimens being held in herbaria around the globe in countries such as India, Switzerland, Austria, Israel, and England.
