Scope and Contents

This collection contains several letters between Haas and his associates, notebooks, photo albums and clippings. It also contains the contents of his wallet and other various personal possessions.

Biographical / Historical

Dr. Theodor Philipp Haas (1892–1977) was a German plant taxonomist, morphologist and Holocaust survivor. He was arrested 10 November 1938 (the day after Kristallnacht), sent to Dachau and later released under the condition that he leave Germany as soon as possible. He left the country in 1940 and eventually made his way to the United States. With the help of the Quaker Foundation of Assistance to Worthy Refugees, Haas became a faculty member at the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia from 1942 until his retirement in 1960.
