John Scott Lennox Gilmour (1906–1986) correspondence
Scope and Contents
This collection contains Gilmour’s correspondence concerning such topics as possible positions at Kew (1929); his acceptance of the post of assistant director there (1931); and an article (1932–1933) on the Cambridge herbarium, which he hoped to have published in the Journal of Botany and which was eventually published by Cambridge University Press. Other correspondence relates to the publication of descriptive notes to accompany sets of exsiccata (Schedae) prepared by William T. Stearn and Gilmour, which were issued in the Journal of Botany as a contribution from the Botany School (Cambridge) herbarium and were to be distributed from the school “in exchange for foreign material or money”; much of the discussion concerns a financial contribution from the school to help defray the publication costs.
Also included here are notes on Veronica acquatica and V. anagallis (1933, apparently by Gilmour), and a letter (Cambridge, 26 October 1933) from Edith R. Saunders, referring to Gilmour’s work and her own with those two species.
