Scope and Contents

This collection contains two letters from the botanical historian and plant morphologist Agnes Arber (1879–1960) to Jack Stauffacher (1920–2017) of the Greenwood Press, San Francisco. There is also a postcard from botanist R. D. Gray to Arber. All items are from Cambridge, 1950.

Item 1: Letter, January 1950, Arber to Stauffacher Apparently relates to Stauffacher’s expressed interest in the study of botany and mentions Arber’s book The Natural Philosophy of Plant Form (Darien, CT, Hafner Publishing Company, 1970), currently in press, and the botanist R. D. Gray.

Item 2: Letter, 11 June 1950, Arber to Stauffacher Thanks Stauffacher for the book in tribute to Goethe, which he sent to Arber.

Item 3: Postcard, 18 February 1950, Gray to Arber Gray says he will help Stauffacher in any way.

Biographical / Historical

Jack Werner Stauffacher (1920–2017) was the owner and publisher of the Greenwood Press, an academic press based in San Francisco, California. He was also a lecturer in design and typography at Carnegie Mellon University, the San Francisco Art Institute, Stanford University, and the University of California-Santa Cruz.
