Biographical / Historical
Francis Boott (1792–1863) was an American-British medical doctor and botanist. Born in Boston, he later relocated to London where he opened a medical practice. Also, he briefly taught botany at the Webb Street School of Anatomy and Medicine in the Southwark district of London (1825–1826). After retiring from his medical practice, Boott focused on the study of botany, becoming known for his study of the genus Carex and was a member and eventually vice president of the Linnaean Society. Boott authored the four-volume work Illustrations of the Genus Carex (London: William Pamplin, 1858–1867). He also wrote the treatment of Carex that appears in William Jackson Hooker’s (1785–1865) Flora boreali-americana (London: H. G. Bohn, [1829–]1840; HI call no. DS15 H784F).
