Scope and Contents

This collection contains:

1. Parchment certificate (Washington, 12 December 1953), handwritten and illustrated, stating that Corresponding Membership was conferred upon Emily Walcott Emmart by the Academic Council of the Academy of American Franciscan History “in recognition of her significant contribution to the study of American Franciscan History”

2. Typescript letter signed (carbon copy, 29 January 1953) from Mrs. Charles Kingsley Trueblood to Mrs. Winthrop H. Battles, Editor, The Garden Club of America Bulletin, regarding a letter Trueblood wrote to Miss Elizabeth L. Clark of the Amateur Gardeners Club. The Clark letter was apparently of a personal nature but about to be published; Trueblood grants permission for the Bulletin to print the letter, and includes a typescript carbon copy of a foreword by Clark.

3. Reprint: Arber, Agnes. 20 July 1940. "An Aztec Herbal." Nature 146: 81. [Six pages, with an undated, brief handwritten greeting by Arber.]

4. Parchment certificate of achievement (June 1974), hand-lettered, awarded to Emily Emmart Trueblood by the Herb Society of America “for her scholarly contributions in the field of Herbal Knowledge”.

Biographical / Historical

Botanist Emily Walcott Emmart (later Mrs. Charles K. Trueblood) (1898–1984) wrote a translation of Martín de la Cruz (?–1641) and Juannes Badianus’s Mexican herbal, known as the Badianus Manuscript, originally composed in Nahuatl and Latin (1552) and now located at the Vatican Library. Her book, The Badianus Manuscript (Codex Barberini, Latin 241) Vatican Library; An Aztec Herbal of 1552 (Baltimore, The Johns Hopkins Press, 1940; HI call no. CA B136EB), includes an introduction, translation, and annotations by her.
