Content Description

This collection includes are five letters (1970–1972) to Kasapligil from botanical author and illustrator John Hutchinson (1884–1972), who began his career on the herbarium staff at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew (1905) and became keeper of the Museum of Botany there (1936–1948). The letters refer to Hutchinson’s activities; to his wife and his daughter Joan; the success with which his Evolution and Phylogeny of Flowering Plants (London, New York, Academic Press, 1969; HI call no. DP1 H975E), a companion to the second edition of his Families of Flowering Plants (Oxford, Clarendon Press, 1959; HI call no. DS1 H975F 959), was selling; his work on a supplement to the two volumes of his Genera of Flowering Plants (Oxford, Clarendon Press, 1964–1967; HI call no. DS1 H975G), which was published in 1967 as Key to the Families of Flowering Plants of the World (HI call no. DS1 H975K 967); John Heslop-Harrison’s (1920–1998) appointment as director of Kew (with Hutchinson’s hopes that he will prove better than certain of his predecessors); and Hutchinson’s years spent at the Kew Herbarium. There is also a letter (15 January 1973) to Dr. and Mrs. Hutchinson from Joan Hutchinson concerning the death of his parents in September 1972 within a week of each other, and the award to her father of the Order of of the British Empire in June 1972. All of the letters were sent from Kew, Surrey.

Baki Kasapligil (1918–1992) was a Turkish-American taxonomist and plant morphologist who taught at Mills College (present-day Mills College at Northeastern University) (1956-1984) in Oakland, California.
