Letterbook, 1746–1820
Scope and Contents
Correspondents and contents are as follows:
Cramer, Gabriel (1704–1752)
Two letters (29 August 1746 and 19 August 1750, both in French, from Geneva) discussing the properties of coral and the publication of papers. The letters do not mention the addressee but are presumably to Pourret.
Christofferson, Andreas
Three letters (29 September 1786; 5 July 1788; n.d., unsigned but clearly in Christofferson’s handwriting; all in French, from Stockholm) to Pourret, concerning the exchange of mineral specimens.
Lapeyrouse, Baron Philippe de Picot de (1744–1818)
Four letters (18 May 1784 to 10 October 1790, all in French, two from Toulouse) to Pourret concerning publications, plants, quarrels with other scientists, and (in the last letter) the French Revolution, which Lapeyrouse supported.
Michaux, François André (1770–1855)
One letter (14 July 1820, in French) to Augustus Lucas Hillhouse (1791–1859), in which Michaux refers to “nos. 5 & 6 de l’ouvrage.”
Palau y Verdera, Antonio (1793–?)
One letter (25 July 1782, in French, from Madrid) from Palau to an unknown recipient, signed “Antoine” rather than “Antonio,” because Palau was writing in French; and a letter (3 July 1782, in French, from Narbonne) to Palau from an unknown writer, apparently the one to whom the 25 July letter is addressed, regarding plants and the Botanical Garden at Madrid.
Thunberg, Carl Peter (1743–1828)
Two letters (12 July 1785, in Latin; 12 February 1786, in French, sent from Uppsala, Sweden) to Pourret, and three drafts in Latin (January 1782, 29 April 1782, and 22 June 1782, sent from Narbonne) of letters and a greeting from Pourret to Thunberg, all discussing plants and publications. (The signature on the 12 February letter is “Charles” rather than “Carl,” because Thunberg was writing in French.)
