George Booth Van Schaack (1903–1983) was a botanical librarian, best known for his work curating the library at the Missouri Botanical Garden. Prior to his botanical work, he received a PhD in mathematics from Harvard University, and spent time as a professor of mathematics until 1943 when he enlisted in the U.S. Naval Reserve. It was during this enlistment that he cultivated a love for botany, collecting and identifying plants in his off-hours on Attu island. Thanks to his collection efforts there, he became the Honorary Curator of Grasses at the Missouri Botanical Garden, kickstarting his botanical career. After years of cultivating the library and providing botanical scholarship, he moved from Missouri to Illinois, where he took a position at the Morton Arboreteum library in 1968, retiring a few years later to Oregon where he became an adjunct professor of botany and mathematics.
