This collection contains notes from lectures given by Dr. Benjamin Smith Barton (1766–1815), professor of materia medica. The topics studied include milk, astringents, tonics, metallic tonics, and stimulants. Within these categories, many plants are mentioned for their medicinal properties. Dr. William Cullen (1710–1790) is referred to several times, and other doctors are also mentioned.

Content Description This collection consists of correspondence between Harding and French horticulturist Emile Lemoine (1862–1943), along with photographs, manuscripts, and other miscellaneous material. In addition, there is some correspondence concerning Harding after her death between her husband, Edward Harding (?–1952), and various correspondents. This collection contains a letter (2 November 1896, 3 pages) from Louis F. Henderson (1853–1942) in Moscow, Idaho, to Frederick V. Coville (1867–1937), sending some notes and questions on Henderson’s Idaho collections, listed by specimen number. There are eight additional pages of “Notes on Idaho Plants” (undated); it is uncertain whether these notes originally accompanied the letter.

Scope and Contents

This collection consists mainly of letters from Charles C. Deam (1865–1953), an expert on the trees, ferns and flowering plants of Indiana; he was for many years the state forester there. The letters concern Deam’s work on Juncus Linnaeus, his Flora of Indiana (Indianapolis, 1940), and other topics. There is at least one copy of a letter from Hermann, some lists of Hermann’s plants (determined by Deam?) and related items.

The collection is a handwritten document, which consists of a letter from the botanist William Hunt Painter (1835–1910) and including extensive reference notes to H.C. Andrews, The Botanists' Repository (London: T. Bensley, 1797–1814; HI call no. DQ2 A213B) and H.W. Schmidt, The Botanists' Chronicle (Chelsea, England: Frederick Bell, 1863–1865).

This collection consists of 168 hand-colored glass lantern slides, numbered 001-171 (slides 42, 50 and 116 are not included in this collection). Also included in this collection is the typed copy of the lecture written by Rachel Hunt describing the slides’ contents. The slides depict gardens and are labelled with owners and often locations.
